BLOCK PRINT

The Craft:

Block printing is approximately 4000 years old and is a kept alive by people like you, appreciative of history, art and culture.

There is story and lineage behind each carved design and the intimacy of printing asks each meter to be unique. Every 6 to 8 inches a new press takes place with the hands of a practiced artist.

The fabric/dye houses are owned and run by multi-generational families and work at the mercy of India's diverse climate. From prepping the vats to mixing dye, to drying 30- 50 running meters at a time, most of the basics take place plein air. Traditional and private techniques are passed down by word of mouth and hands-on apprenticeships amongst relatives.

Working with this material is an honor as is observing this ancient craft outlast modern day micro trends that come and go like the wind.
